Surviving SoHo

SoHo was called “Hell’s Hundred Acres” at one time by the New York City Fire Department because of the constant rag fires from abandon warehouses in the area. This documentary follows Rosemary Castoro, a sculptor and long time resident of SoHo. The film focused on the artist’s prolific work and her struggles with eviction.

Ricky Acosta collects wrestling dolls. He admires their muscle-bound forms and proudly displays them inside his room. Ricky’s admiration for the wrestlers’ ideal physiques contrasts sharply with his own. Born with congenital hip displacement, scoliosis, fetal alcohol syndrome, he became homeless at age 19. He struggles to bring normalcy to his life.

The Ritual of Evelyn Reyes

For over 5 years Evelyn Reyes an artist at Creativity Explored has produced hundreds of drawings of a repeated shape she calls “carrots”. She sits with her carrots after drawing them, sometimes for days before she starts a new piece. This is her ritual after completing each drawing.

This documentary trailer is about a Brazilian-American woman, a spiritual healer named Maria Lucia/Sauer - to present a personal look into what it means to do this sort of work. And because Brazil is a highly stratified society in terms of race and class, this film will also touch on issues related to the disparity of wealth and the mixing of cultures.
